The MEC for Agriculture Nonceba Kontsiwe spent an action-packed day in the OR Tambo District driving government efforts to support local farmers in meeting market standards and scaling up to commercial production.
MEC Kontsiwe officially handed over a brand-new tractor and farming implements to the Mgxabakazi Farming Project in Port St John’s (Ward 4). This mechanisation boost will enhance production, speed up land preparation, and increase crop yields.

The MEC also conducted a site visit to the Rural Market Centre to inspect local processing and marketing facilities aimed at connecting smallholders to larger commercial supply chains.
The day concluded at the OR Tambo Agricultural Show at the Port St John’s Sports Field, where local farmers showcased their high-quality produce and livestock.

MEC Kontsiwe said the shows had a competition because “we want to encourage them(farmers) to do more.”
“They are told why and how they won and that information assists those who did not win to rectify their mistakes. I was thrilled to see youth working hard and winning because of their good work. We are sure now that all the farmers are encouraged.”

Departmental support continues to focus on helping emerging farmers build sustainable, profitable agricultural enterprises that feed communities and grow the local economy.
